U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree Arrives in Washington D.C.
We’re thrilled to share exciting updates on the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree, also known as the “People’s Tree” Initiative! This year’s tree was selected from the Tongass National Forest, which includes the Wrangell T3/Upward Bound (UB) site. T3 Alaska and UB students partnered with the USDA Forest Service and community collaborators to tackle the challenge of sustaining the tree’s life during its 4,000-mile journey across the United States. The three-week Whistlestop Tour included eleven stops, where communities celebrated the festive campaign and learned about Alaska’s national forests and the 54-year tradition of the USDA Forest Service providing the “People’s Tree.”
Last week, we received exciting confirmation that the tree arrived in Washington, D.C., in excellent health! The tree is now being trimmed and prepared for the U.S. Capitol Tree Lighting Ceremony, a cherished national tradition. The ceremony will take place on December 3 at 5:00 PM EST on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol.
T3 Alaska students will travel to Washington, D.C., as honored guests at the ceremony. Thanks to Alaska Airlines’ donation of airfare and other generous partners, these students will continue to learn and grow as they celebrate the success of this remarkable project. Beyond the ceremony, they will attend a post-lighting gala, where they’ll have the opportunity to speak with distinguished government members about their contributions. While in D.C., students are eager to explore prestigious colleges and participate in cultural experiences, expanding their horizons and deepening their understanding of the world.
Stay tuned for updates as we celebrate this incredible milestone together!
