UAF Upward Bound Students Meet with Senator Sullivan Office to Share Community Concerns
Six UAF Upward Bound students recently had the opportunity to meet with Chris Brown, Legislative Correspondent from Senator Dan Sullivan’s office to share some of the challenges their communities are facing—and how Upward Bound is helping them work toward brighter futures. The meeting was thoughtful, positive, and full of heart.
Each student introduced themselves and the school they represented, offering details about their schools and insight into their unique experiences. They spoke honestly about how Upward Bound has supported their academic journey and inspired them to pursue higher education.
The students spoke with Mr. Brown about pressing issues in their communities. Topics included high teacher turnover, lack of affordable housing, and community based issues such as coastal erosion. The students were respectful and kind but also clear and sincere about the very real problems they and their peers face every day. They expressed how deeply they care for their home communities and how these challenges affect their education and opportunities.
Mr. Brown shared his own story about stepping into leadership and encouraged all the students to apply for internships to build experience and continue making a difference.
We’re proud of these incredible students who represented each Upward Bound site across Alaska!
