Student Project Spotlight: Galena Scale Map with Electrical Grid Indicators

  • News

Students from Cordova and Galena took on a hands-on project to visualize how energy flows through the town of Galena. The team—Micah Phillips (Cordova), Colter Scotton (Galena), Max Osborn (Cordova), Amelia Niles (Cordova), and Isla Haisman (Cordova)—created a detailed scale map complete with 3D-printed buildings and plans to add LED lights showing the electrical grid.

The goal was to provide a physical representation of Galena’s energy distribution—highlighting power lines, building energy use, and other infrastructure—so stakeholders can easily share this information in meetings or offices.

The team combined paper mache for a textured map base with 3D-printed buildings for fast, accurate construction. Along the way, they tackled challenges like printing issues, tight time constraints, and scaling buildings correctly. Skills like grant writing, map layout, and painting were all part of the process.

Next steps include adding LEDs to show electricity flow and exploring a future T3 project mapping Cordova.

Through collaboration, planning, and creativity, the students brought Galena’s energy system to life in a tangible, interactive way.
