Community Invited to Galena STEAM Fest

  • News

T3 Alaska is excited to offer the public an opportunity to learn more about the program and visit the new makerspace! T3 Alaska is hosting a booth at the Galena Spring Carnival Saturday, April 5, followed by a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house that evening at the Galena Interior Learning Academy (GILA). On Sunday, April 6, middle-high school students from both Sydney Huntington and Galena Interior Learning Academy are welcome to attend a STEAM Fest at the makerspace from 12:30-4:00 pm.

T3 Alaska will be at the Spring Carnival with a booth, where the public can learn more about the T3 Alaska program and learn more about the new T3 Alaska Makerspace located in Galena Interior Learning Academy! The public invitation is extended to include a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Galena Makerspace that evening at 7:00 PM along with a tour showcasing its technology and resources. Student leaders will present their projects and share their experiences with the T3 Alaska program. Come and join us to learn about this new space and exciting approach to hands-on learning and community engagement!

On Sunday, students are invited to the makerspace to attend a session on growth mindset starting at 12:30 PM followed by rotating exploratory sessions from 1:00–4:00 PM. These sessions will introduce students to 3D printing, Raspberry Pi programming, and GLOBE weather station data collection.

A makerspace is a safe and dynamic learning environment where students explore technology, foster creativity, and develop critical thinking skills. By collaborating with local partners, students apply their knowledge to solve real-world problems and make a positive impact in their communities.

Event funding is made possible through the Alaska Center for Energy and Power (ACEP), the energy research institute at the University of Alaska Fairbank, and aligns with grant objectives to  innovative energy solutions throughout Alaska. Galena is a front-runner in alternative  energy projects with local partners pursuing community driven  projects. T3 Alaska makerspaces are a natural place to introduce new technology concepts to students and the community.

T3 Alaska proudly partners with local collaborators like Christi Buffington, who leads the GLOBE weather monitoring program. The GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) program is an international science and education initiative that advances Earth systems science through data collection and analysis.

Another key partner is SEGA (Sustainable Energy for Galena, Alaska), a nonprofit jointly founded by the Galena City School District, the City of Galena, and the Louden Tribal Council. SEGA provides renewable energy solutions to heat local schools, and through this partnership, T3 Alaska student leaders gain hands-on experience with energy infrastructure, equipping them with the skills and knowledge necessary for their futures.
