College, Careers, and Civic Engagement: Upward Bound Seniors Explore UAS and the Capitol

As part of their senior year experience, UAF Upward Bound students recently traveled to Juneau for a college and career-focused trip that combined higher education exploration with civic engagement. The visit offered an in-depth look at the University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) and the workings of Alaska’s state government, expanding both academic and professional horizons for the group.

Having already spent time on the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) campus, students appreciated the opportunity to compare college environments. UAS’s coastal location, smaller campus feel, and summer housing options—including dorm availability—made an impression. While several students have committed to attend UAF in the fall, some are now considering taking summer courses at UAS to get a head start on their college journey.

A highlight of the trip was a personal meeting with Senator Jesse Kiehl, who spent extended time speaking with the students. He offered a candid look into his role as a legislator, encouraged their curiosity, and listened attentively to their perspectives as young Alaskans. The conversation emphasized the importance of civic responsibility and youth voice in shaping the state’s future.

Following the meeting, students toured the Alaska State Capitol, visited the legislative chamber and finance committee rooms, and explored the house side—gaining a firsthand understanding of how state government operates.

Beyond academics and politics, the trip offered experiences that can’t be found in a classroom. Students visited a glacier, saw whales on the water, and even spotted a bear and cub on the way to St. Thérèse Chapel. In downtown Juneau, they reflected on their journey and bonded over a meal of fish and chips at The Hangar.

This trip represented more than a visit—it was a launch point. For these Upward Bound seniors, it deepened college aspirations, sparked career interests, and highlighted the value of civic awareness. As they prepare to enter college this fall, their path forward is clearer, bolder, and better connected to the place they call home.
