Building Alaska’s Blue Economy

  • News

The film follows the story of a partnership between T3 Alaska, the University of Alaska Southeast Applied Fisheries Program, Alaska Blue Economy Center and Prince William Sound College. Together, they are creating hands-on learning experiences that reach far beyond the classroom.

This film and other details regarding the partnership can be found at the following website.

Alaska holds more than half of America’s coastline and a vast sweep of the nation’s ocean waters. Those waters feed families, sustain communities, and shape culture. But they’re also changing. Sea ice is thinning, ocean chemistry is shifting, and coastal communities are being asked to adapt faster than ever before. That future will belong to young people who understand these waters—and T3 Alaska is helping them get there.

Students aren’t just reading about ocean science—they are standing on the deck of research vessels, tending hatchery tanks, collecting data, testing ideas, and seeing firsthand how Alaska’s marine systems work. For many, it’s the first time they can imagine themselves in a marine career. For others, it’s a chance to carry forward the knowledge and stewardship traditions of their own communities.

Alaska’s mariculture and fisheries sector powers local economies and supplies food to people across the country. By investing in young Alaskans, T3 Alaska and its partners are helping to grow a workforce rooted in local understanding—people who know the science, know the coastlines, and care about the future of both.

This film is part of Tomorrow’s Catch: Securing Our Future Fisheries, a digital series produced by the American Fisheries Society (AFS) in partnership with Content With Purpose (CWP).
