Brevig Mission Students Named State Finalist in National Samsung “Solve for Tomorrow” Competition

  • News

T3 Alaska students in Brevig Mission have been recognized as one of 300 State Finalists in the prestigious Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition, securing a $2,500 prize package. This national competition challenges students in grades 6-12 to apply STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) skills to address real-world issues within their communities. The initiative aims to foster problem-based learning, environmental stewardship, and social entrepreneurship, equipping students with the tools to become future innovators and change-makers.

For their project, Brevig Mission students are tackling a critical safety challenge unique to their region. Residents frequently cross the frozen Bering Sea using snowmachines and ATVs to reach Teller, but unpredictable ice thickness presents a serious hazard. To address this, the students are developing a real-time ice thickness monitoring device utilizing sonar or radar technology. By integrating principles of physics, engineering, and environmental science, their goal is to create a portable and durable solution that enhances travel safety for their community. With their innovative approach to Arctic safety, the students of Brevig Mission are demonstrating the power of STEM to drive meaningful change in their community.
