UAF Bridging Programs: Connecting High School Students to College and Career Pathways
T3 Alaska and the Upward Bound program together serve as the primary bridging initiative for the University of Alaska Fairbanks College of Engineering and Mines (UAF CEM). These two complementary programs support high school students in achieving their post-secondary and career goals through a combination of academic guidance, personal development, and hands-on experience.
T3 Alaska empowers students to become problem-solvers, innovators, and leaders within their communities. Rooted in respect, adaptability, and a growth mindset, T3 Alaska engages students through technology-rich, real-world learning experiences. Whether flying drones for erosion monitoring, prototyping engineering solutions in makerspaces, or presenting at statewide energy and climate conferences, T3 students develop the skills and confidence needed to navigate and shape their futures. The program provides pathways for community-driven projects and collaborative partnerships that connect students to mentors, professionals, and opportunities.
Upward Bound, a federally funded TRIO program, focuses on increasing college access and success for first-generation, fiscally challenged students. The program offers year-round academic support, college preparatory services, and individualized academic guidance. Students receive tutoring, academic advising, and help with college entrance exams (such as the SAT and ACT), as well as assistance with college applications, scholarship searches, and completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Upward Bound also provides valuable summer residential experiences on the UAF campus, helping students gain familiarity with college life and build a sense of belonging in higher education.
Together, these programs form a powerful bridge from high school to college, combining technical training, academic preparation, and personal mentorship. This joint effort fosters both career readiness and a deep sense of purpose in students as they explore and pursue their goals.
The University of Alaska Fairbanks College of Engineering and Mines plays a vital role as a host, partner, and support structure. UAF CEM provides facilities, faculty mentorship, and research opportunities that connect classroom learning with cutting-edge applications in engineering and science. This partnership ensures students have the tools, networks, and encouragement necessary to succeed in college and beyond.
In uniting the strengths of T3 Alaska, Upward Bound, and UAF CEM, this bridging program helps students reach their fullest potential—transforming not only their own lives, but also the futures of their communities.
