Nanook Commitment Ceremony

  • News

On February 21, 2025, UAF proudly hosted the first annual Nanook Commitment Ceremony at the BP Design Theater. This event formally recognized students committing to UAF, celebrating their achievements while supporting their transition from high school to college. The ceremony featured inspiring speeches from Upward Bound Director Michelle Spillane and Dean Bill Schnabel, acknowledgments of student accomplishments, and a pledge of commitment. Faculty, staff, and community members joined in celebrating this milestone, making it a memorable and well-received event.

Beyond the ceremony, students participated in a comprehensive campus experience designed to prepare them for academic success and campus life. Activities included:

  • Academic & Career Exploration: A campus tour in partnership with multiple departments, academic advising with Rural Student Services (RSS), and visits to the TRIO Student Support Services (SSS), and College of Engineering & Mines (CEM) Open House. Students explored career pathways through a backstage theater tour, a CTE classroom visit (Automotive, Welding, Culinary Arts, Education, Medical – CNA/Nursing), and discussions about work-study opportunities.
  • Hands-on Learning: Students toured the UAF Makerspace and met with the Alaska Center for Energy and Power CyberPod team, gaining insight into technology and innovation at UAF.
  • College Readiness: Sessions focused on entrance exams, admissions, and financial literacy, including a FAFSA discussion, scholarship guidance, and money management strategies to ensure a smooth transition to college.
  • Engagement & Community Building: Students attended the UAF Career Fair, a Nanook basketball game, a bowling night, and a local Cinderella musical—where several Upward Bound students performed in the cast.

This immersive experience helped students connect deeply with one another, solidifying their commitment to attending UAF and setting them on a path to success.
